Just one month after the release of his latest album, “Swimming,” twenty-six-year-old rapper and record producer Mac Miller was recently found dead in Miller’s San Fernando Valley home from an apparent drug overdose, or possible suspected suicide.
In a 2017 study, over 72,000 Americans died from drug overdoses, including illicit drugs and prescription opioids. Americans as well as celebrities have had an issue combating addiction. Michael Jackson died at age 50 from a lethal combination of prescription drugs. Whitney Houston died at age 49 from drowning in the bathtub with cocaine and metabolites in her system. Demi Lovato age 25, was recently hospitalized after a drug overdose. An autopsy is being done to confirm the cause of Miller`s death. When his friend found him at the scene, he was unconscious. First responders and law enforcement reported that no trace of drugs or alcohol was evident at the scene. Numerous witnesses were questioned at the site concerning the night before and the day of this tragedy occurred. (betterhealth.vic.gov).
Drugs affect humans in different ways depending on chemical compounds, and effects vary from person to person. Many are affected specifically by depressants and stimulants, slowing the nervous system and causing an array of symptoms. Alcohol, opiates, and benzodiazepines (minor tranquilizers) are examples of depressants. Stimulants, on the other hand, speed or ‘stimulate’ the central nervous system, potentially eliciting anxiety, panic, seizures, stomach cramps or paranoia. Nicotine, amphetamines, cocaine, and ecstasy are examples of stimulants.
If you or someone you know is dealing with a drug problem, do not hesitate to ask for help. The key to living without addiction is creating a new life. Do not live the life you used to have that led you to your addiction. Demi Lovato, singer and actress, made a revival after her hospitalization for a reported overdose back in July of 2018. Lovato is changing the conversation by her recent twitter post about how God is keeping her alive and well. She also mentions her perseverance through hard times such as the one she went through. It is okay to admit to your mistakes and personal issues, but it is not okay to allow them to overpower you.
