The 2018 Halloween Poetry contest, sponsored by NEHS in coordination with Haunted Hallway and Decatur After Dark, concluded on October 22. The competition was judged by three English teachers. The winner of the contest was announced during Decatur’s pep rally, congratulating junior Colleen Shanahan for her poem titled, “Happy Halloween.” Shanahan was one of six entries and was awarded free entrance in to all three Decatur After Dark activities.

Shanahan’s poem reads:

Out on the street,

With the night a-glow;

Something was lurking

Down below.

Bats flew high,

Trilling heedlessly,

While children screamed,

With cries gleefully.

As candy filled their bags,

A monster sneaked,

Right behind them

About to shriek.

The children spun,

Their faces bleaching,

The beast smiling

As he was reaching.

He swiftly snatched,

Their treats for the eating,

And ran off into the night

Heart rapidly beating.

Opening his mouth,

Giving a lolly a lick,

He was feeling quite jolly,

With his Halloween trick.
