The 2023-24 SDHS Swim Team

The Stephen Decatur Swim team has been a group of some of the kindest and hard-working kids in the school.

Ever since 2007, when the team was founded, they support each other and have truly formed their own community. The team’s performance and dedication reflect the leadership of the head coach of the team, Kristina Watts.

Each week, swimmers spend around an hour after school at the Sports Core Pool to practice. This usually consists of sets, like sprint swimming and long distance.Weekly practices accumulate into meets, where swimmers compete against other schools in around four events. Athletes participate in different events focus on getting their own personal best time as well as going against the opposing teams.

“Boys and girls swim at the same events, expect against their own gender. They’re really loud because we all cheer each other on and are filled with positivity and support,” said Kalli Rathel, a freshman on the team.

The effort has paid off considering last season, when they took second place at regionals. Because of this they were able to move on to the state championships.

It was by far one of the most outstanding meets of the season. Along with this, three swimmers won regional titles in their respective events.

“You are competing against yourself to get your best times,” said Kate Slaysman, “but the swim team is truly the most sportsmanlike and supportive of each other.”

The 2023-24 Swim Team is a admirable group of athletes who support and care for each other. Through hours practicing, and time spent at meets, they’ve really improved and grown into their own group.
