Star Wars is back on the big screen. The iconic space saga is releasing its first movie since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. While there have been many Star Wars shows released on Disney plus since that time, with some of the shows receiving critical acclaim, such as Andor, The Mandalorian, and The Bad Batch, not all have done well. Some of the Disney plus shows such as The Book of Boba Fett and The Acolyte, did not find their footing which resulted in their cancellation due to poor reviews by critics and audiences alike.
Finally, after a long wait, Star Wars is returning to where they started, the movie theaters. The Mandalorian and Grogu, which stars two characters from the Disney Plus show The Mandalorian, remains one of the best performing series, and the new film will continue the adventures of The Mandalorian, Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, and Grogu, the adorable alien child who took the world by storm a few years ago.

The trailer’s highlights include the return of The Mandalorian’s original ship, The Razor Crest, some cute Grogu moments, The Mandalorian fighting in a gladiator ring, Mando destroying an AT-AT Walker, and some cameos from across the Star Wars universe. The trailer points to a movie that will hopefully be fun and fulfilling for lifelong fans of the series as well as new fans to the franchise.
The first season of the Mandalorian was successful because it had a Western “lone star” feeling that later got overshadowed by cameos and larger stories. The new movie seems to bring the characters back to their roots and seems to bring back the feeling that made The Mandalorian such a hit show in the first place.
Critics and audiences have responded positively to the trailer, saying that it could bring the fun back to Star Wars. However, some fans are worried that the movie is too much like a Disney Plus show and is aimed at a younger streaming audience and won’t hold up to the expectations of a Star Wars movie.
All in all, Star Wars returning to the big screen is an exciting moment that many are anticipating. The Mandalorian and Grogu releases in theaters on May 22, 2026.
