Seahawk Company is one of the unique programs that Stephen Decatur High School has to offer, ranging from fun and educational field trips, leadership opportunities, and more. Naval science teaches students the basics of the military branch and helps students improve and construct the best version of themself through lessons on leadership, self-improvement, trial and error, and more. Seahawk company is involved in both the school and the community by presenting the colors during sports games and at local American legion posts while also teaching students how to properly and professional fold a flag.
In recent years, Seahawk Company has seen a decline in students signing up to take part in the program resulting in missed opportunities that Naval Science has to offer. For many students, enrolling in the Naval Science program means they must enroll in the military upon graduation, but this is not accurate. While NJROTC does stand for Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, and is sponsored by the Navy, it is not directly part of the Navy and students do not need to commit to military service after high school.
NJROTC teaches students about the three core values of the unit: Honor, Courage, and Commitment. These values help cadets and classmates not only become better students, but active members of their community and workplace. It is a rewarding class on many levels, and Cadets can earn ribbons, medals, graduation cords, while also improving their ranking as they move through the program.
Previous Company Commander and Decatur Alum Tristian Ayars stated, “Leadership skills and public speaking skills are benefits from taking the program.” The NJROTC program is one of the hidden backbones of leadership at Decatur and a worthwhile program for all students.
