Boys Varsity Soccer took home the MPSAAA State Championship for the first time in 23 years. The boys started off their journey to the state championship with a scrimmage against Archbishop Curley high school. This is when coach Jamie Greenwood said to himself, “this is where the championship level starts. These boys have it in them to make it all the way through.”
The team battled adversity with each game being close, keeping them on their toes throughout the season. “Can we finish the ball,” Greenwood asked, “can we put the ball in the net and take home the win?” The boys were able to game in and game out, in part to their senior leadership. Greenwood explained how the boys worked their butts off and put in extra workdays to not only improve their own skills, but to mentor the younger players. This dedication from the upperclassmen prepared the team to be ready for anything and, helped keep them in shape so they could continue their journey.
The team’s biggest fights came when they played against Sherwood and the semifinal games where they played at Kent Island High School and ended up in over time. The boys had to dig deep to come out with the glorious 3-2 win to advance into the playoffs. After hard fought wins in the playoffs, it came time for the state championship against Continental High School at the UMBC stadium. The same stadium where the Seahawks won the state championship title in 2002; when Greenwood was an assistant coach and second year teacher.
“I didn’t want to disappoint anyone,” Greenwood reflected, and he and the boys did not disappoint by any means. The boys opened the scoring but then Continental came back and scored within the first 10 minutes of the game. After the half, the boys found their footing and rhythm and scored three consecutive goals leading to the 4-1 victory in the state championship.
