On November 11, Decatur’s Unified Tennis team secured back-to-back state championships; they didn’t stop there. The team was once again awarded the Sportsmanship award for their teamwork, positivity, and respect. A win that truly embodied the message behind unified sports.
The tournament was held at College Park’s Junior Tennis Champions Center and had appearances from 16 high schools from across Maryland. Led coaches Lindsay Owens, Shannon Bone, Shonna Schultz, and Hunter Powell, the Seahawks couldn’t be stopped and ultimately finished with a record of 10-1.
Beyond their athletic successes, the team also stood out for their outstanding sportsmanship. This award was voted on by the other 15 teams that competed, the officials, and coaches. Student coach Mason Lyons said, “The best feeling was winning, and that title means everything. More importantly, we built a family and showed what real sportsmanship looks like.”
The Seahawks return to the beach not just as champions but as role models for the school and community. Their unique combination of respect and competitive edge is a true testament to the culture cultivated throughout the year by their coaches. This win solidifies a standard of greatness inside the program and shows what can happen when legendary coaches and athletes come together with one common goal.
