Worcester Technical High School (WTHS) offers Worcester County students a variety of programs that cannot be found in a typical high school. From programs that focus on the trades to in depth courses that provide students hands-on experience in real world situations and roles, WTHS prides itself on preparing students to be enrolled, enlisted, and employed.
Biomedical Sciences, (Biomed) is one of the hands-on programs at WTHS that is available to students beginning their freshman year. Biomed consists of four courses: Principles of the Biomedical Sciences, Human Body Systems, Medical Interventions, and Biomedical Innovation. The programs’ goal is to increase the number of students who want to pursue careers in biomedical sciences and healthcare.
According to sophomore Yasmeen Asad, the most interesting aspect of the program are the labs that you do while in the program. She says that if you want to take the course, the most important thing is to turn in everything on time and pay attention in class, that is what made her successful. Asad also spoke about one specific lab where students learned how to draw blood, a skill that she said she will use most often in the future.
This program is through “The Project Lead The Way.” PLTW is a non-profit organization that provides activities, projects, and problem-based (APB) learning experiences for all students grades K-12 in computer-science, engineering, and biomedical science.
In addition to the hands-on experience students receive at WTHS, Stevenson University in Maryland offers students four biology credits during their first semester enrolled. These credits are only offered for those students who complete all four Biomed courses and score at least an 80% on each of the ending assessments.
For students who have an interest in science and the medical field, and love hands on research and labs, the Biomedical Sciences Program is a perfect fit and available to all Worcester County students.
